Abstract

|
The bacteriophage 0-1 of Felix and Callow was evaluated in a sopt test for the presumtive identification of Salmonella cultures.
The phage lystate with 7¥ª10^(8) pfu/ml. lysed 178.182 (97.8%) strains of Salmonella belonging to various 0 groups.
All strains of enteric organisms other than Salmonella tested were found to be resistant to the 0-1 phage, with the exception of Escherichia coli strains where 1.29 (3.45%) were susceptible. The E. coli strains sensitive to 0-1 phage lysis were lactose positive and thus would not be easily confused with the lactose negative Salmonella.
The results of the sopt test are availabale in sixteen to eighteen hours compared to the 2 dyas required for conventional biochemical tests. The 0-1 pphage test is a simple, rapid, and inexpensive screening procedure for Salmonella in the clinical laboratory, offering a valuable complement to biochemical screening methods.
